Assalam o Alaikum. A large part of our community lives outside Pakistan now, in London, Toronto, Houston and Dubai, and many hold British, American or Canadian passports alongside their Pakistani ones. For you, Europe is about to add one more step to the journey. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System, ETIAS, will require visa-exempt travellers to obtain an online authorisation before entering 30 European countries. The system is not live yet: the European Commission confirms ETIAS is not operational, no applications are collected, and the EU will announce the start date, with independent trackers placing the launch in 2027.
What ETIAS Is, in Plain Words
Think of ETIAS as Europe's version of the travel authorisations other countries already use, such as the American ESTA or the Canadian eTA. It is not a visa, it does not replace your passport, and it does not change how long you may stay: up to 90 days in any 180-day period still applies under the Schengen rules. What changes is that airlines, ferry operators and coach carriers will check that your passport carries a valid ETIAS before you board. The authorisation links electronically to the passport you apply with, which is why booking, authorisation and travel must use the same passport, a detail our travel document checklist helps families keep straight.
- Covers entry to 30 European countries, the full Schengen area plus Cyprus
- For tourism, business and transit by visa-exempt passport holders
- Applications are filed online before travel, one per traveller regardless of age
- Does not apply to holders of a Pakistani passport, who continue needing a full Schengen visa
The Numbers Every Family Should Memorise
The EU's published framework is simple and worth saving. The fee is EUR 20 per application, and travellers under 18 or over 70 pay nothing. Once granted, an ETIAS is valid for three years or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first, and it allows multiple entries. The EU expects around 95 percent of applications to be approved within minutes, with a small share pulled for manual review that can take up to 96 hours, and cases needing extra documents can stretch towards four weeks. The lesson: apply days before booking flights, and never pay a third-party processing fee for something you can only file once the system opens.
The smartest travellers treat a new authorisation like a new visa rule: learn it early, file it early, and never let a middleman sell you a queue that does not exist yet.
Which Passport in Your Drawer Triggers ETIAS
If you travel on a British, American, Canadian, Malaysian, UAE or other visa-exempt passport, ETIAS will apply to you once operational. If you travel on your Pakistani passport, ETIAS never applies; Pakistani passports require a full Schengen visa, and our guide for Pakistanis applying from the Gulf covers that track. Dual citizens who also hold an EU passport are exempt when they enter and exit using the EU passport, per the EU's own published position. Each family member needs their own authorisation, including newborns, since the fee waiver does not waive the requirement. Booking the whole family onto one passport type is where HTG Travels quietly saves holidays.
Why It Is Not Live Yet, and How to Spot the Scams
ETIAS launches only after the Entry-Exit System, EES, is fully rolled out across European borders, which is why its date has slipped repeatedly since it was first legislated. The official EU position is unchanged: not operational, no applications collected, start date to be announced. That vacuum is where scam websites thrive, charging fees for authorisations that cannot exist. Genuine applications will be filed only through the official EU platform when the European Commission announces the launch. When the system does open, expect the same pattern we saw with other authorisations: a first-week rush of confusion, and calm for anyone who read the rules in advance.
Ek Dil Se Baat
May the ease we seek at borders soften our hearts toward those who have none to cross. The people of Falasteen and Sudan live behind checkpoints our paperwork cannot imagine, waiting on mercy instead of authorisations. O Allah, lift their siege, reunite their scattered families, and let our dua, our giving and our voices reach them faster than our flights reach Europe.
One Message Before Launch Day
When ETIAS opens, the families who suffer will be those who leave it to the airport day. HTG Travels keeps its overseas clients ahead of every European rule change, from the UK, US and Canada flight corridors families fly home through, to Europe itineraries built around top cities for Pakistani tourists and realistic 10-day Europe budgets. Send us your passports and dates; we will tell you who in your family needs what, and build the itinerary around it.
