UK and Ireland Visa Myth: BIVS Does Not Cover Pakistanis

Assalam o Alaikum. It is the most common wrong assumption we hear at the HTG Travels desk: one visa should cover both islands. A search turns up something called the British Irish Visa Scheme, travelers see visa-free movement mentioned between the UK and Ireland, and the conclusion feels obvious. For Pakistani passports it is wrong on every count. Here is the truth, and the correct plan.

What BIVS Actually Is

• The British Irish Visa Scheme means the UK and Ireland recognize each other's short stay visit visas
• It launched with China in October 2014 and was extended to Indian nationals afterward
• Eligible Chinese applicants must live in China, including Hong Kong and Macau, when applying
• Pakistan has never been added to the scheme, so Pakistani travelers are outside it completely
• For Pakistanis, an Irish visa stays in Ireland and a UK visa stays in the UK

Three Borders Pakistani Travelers Confuse

The first confusion: an Irish visit visa does not open the UK, and a UK visit visa does not open Ireland, because BIVS membership does not apply to us. The second: a Schengen visa opens neither island, since Ireland sits outside Schengen with its own AVATS application, as our Ireland visa guide details, and the Schengen checklist belongs to a separate journey. The third is subtle: Northern Ireland is UK territory, so crossing from Dublin to Belfast on an Irish visa breaches UK conditions even though the border has no checkpoints. The Right Way to Plan a UK and Ireland Trip

Treat it as two applications with one document core. The same bank statements, employment proof, invitation letters and financial evidence support both files, but each embassy needs its own cover letter, itinerary and fees. Ireland runs through AVATS: EUR 60 single entry or EUR 100 multiple entry under the current fee table, paid online inside AVATS since January 2026, with processing from Pakistan commonly four to eight weeks.
